MalawiBloat

Malawibloat is a decise that can kill your cichlids. It does not only occur on Malawicichlids but also from lakes Victoria and Tanganjika. The first symptom is a loss of appetite. This is the moment to step in before the desease evolve which means abnormal swelling of the abdomen (hence the name-bloat), an increased respiratory rate, reclusiveness, white streaky feces, and sitting on the bottom of the tank or lingering at the surface. Red marks around your fish's anus or skin ulcerations might also be apparent. At this point, i'm sorry to say that at this piont you are to late to save the fish because extensive damage has already occurred to the fish's liver, kidneys, and/or swim bladder. Death typically results within 24-72 hours after the secondary symptoms occur.

Treatment for Malawibloat

Fortunatly you can cure your infected cichlid, but you have to be fast

Once you notice that your fish has lost an appetite for food (and is not just holding fry in her buccal cavity), you should remove it to a seperate aquarium and begin treatment immediately. There are two treatments for Bloat that I know are very effectve. The first and most common is Emtryl (Metronidazole), and the second is Clout. To improve the water condtion you should change 30% of the water. and supply the aquarium with more oxigen, followed up with a 50% water change. I reccoment to remove any filters the drug claim not to harm denitrifying bacteria. The initial 30% water change is not necessary if this is a separate tank not previously in use. The water change is important partially because you won't be performing water changes for the duration of treatment. You can also use a combination of these two drugs. you know the fish is cured when the fish will regain its apetite.

Three main causes for "Malawi Bloat" have been identified:

1) The addition of large amounts of salt with the intention of creating a more natural habitat. That's correct, the rift lakes of Africa are alkaline and have hard water (pH 8.0-8.9, and a General Hardness between 200-400 ppm), but common salt will not alkalinize your tank. What makes water "hard" is a combination of dissolved calcium and magnesium. If you have soft water and need to raise the pH/hardness of your water, The use of crushed coral as a substrate is what you should concider. Rocks, like limestone, are also known to raise the hardness of the water, it's It's also recommendent that you do a lot of waterchanging this will also benivit the hardness of your water. it's not to be recommendent that you use wood in your malawiaquarium it will only raise the ph.

2) Long term exposure to poor water quality. parasites will be getting the uppperhand. Malawi's are very capable of fighting of decises, but when the conditions in the aquarium are poor they will have a lot of problems with it.

3) A bad diet, Malawi's have their own dietery needs, you can's give a cichlids that lives on algae to much of protien food like bloodworms. Also to be avoided is the use of only flake or pelletfood they contain a lot of fishmeal.
